Every once in a while we can all use a little life do-over. An upcoming Richmond event can give some of us the “clean slate” we seek.
Contra Costa Clean Slate Day 2017 aims to help those criminal records in Contra Costa County wipe their slates clean so as to remove the barriers that stand in the way of finding employment and housing.
Set for Saturday, April 8, 2017, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, 684 Juliga Woods St. in Richmond, the annual event can help community members reduce a felony conviction to a misdemeanor or have misdemeanor and felony convictions expunged.
“Our experience working with individuals is that having a prior criminal history and not having a driver’s license are huge barriers to being productive members of society,” Ellen McDonnell, deputy public defender, Contra Costa County Public Defender’s Office, told For Richmond about last year’s event. “Our office puts an emphasis on expanding our clean slate practice.”
Who should attend? “Anyone with a prior conviction in Contra Costa County that’s causing a barrier for jobs, housing, etc.” said McDonnell.
The free event is organized by a host of partners, including the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, the Contra Costa Superior Court, the Contra Costa Public Defenders Office, the Office of Reentry and Justice, Rubicon Programs, Bay Area Legal Aid, the Reentry Success Center, the Safe Return Project, Men & Women of Purpose and the African-American Health Conductors.
Although the application date has passed to have a case before the judge April 8, Clean Slate Day can still help community members get the ball rolling on expunging prior criminal records or gathering some 411 re: overcoming unpaid traffic tickets.
The passage of California Proposition 47 in November 2014—a law that allows certain low-level, nonviolent felonies to be changed to misdemeanors—has made events like the Contra Costa Clean Slate Day 2017 possible.
Clean Slate Day attendees should bring a government issued photo ID to the event. For more info, contact the Clean Slate hotline at the Public Defender’s office at 925-335-8075 or email@example.com or call the Reentry Success Center at 510-679-2122.
