An innovative financial bootcamp scheduled this week aims to equip youth with the financial skills needed to navigate the real world in and beyond Rich City.
Set for Wednesday, June 21, 2017, from 12:30-4:30 p.m. at Crescent Park Multi-Cultural Family Resource Center, 5004 Hartnett Ave. in Richmond, “Mad City Money” is a free bootcamp that welcomes youth ages 14-24. Up to 100 youth can participate.
Seminar host Travis Credit Union describes Mad City Money as a “3.5 hour simulation [that] gives participants a sense of adulthood with income and bills to pay…The goal is to simulate the realities of approaching financial responsibilities.”
As part of the simulation, Travis Credit Union states that “each participant is assigned a temporary identity, including occupation, salary, debt, marital status and children, etc. They visit nine ‘merchants’ in Mad City to choose housing and transportation and purchase necessities and wants.”
Youth attendees will face obstacles such as a pushy car salesperson, a commission-based realtor and the ever unpopular ‘Fickle Finger of Fate,’ according to a recent report in the Richmond Standard about the bootcamp.
The overriding objectives of the bootcamp, per Travis Credit Union, are to help youth practice budgeting as an adult with realistic circumstances; identify and experience the consequences of poor decisions; develop good judgment regarding spending; and understand that budgeting is a necessary step in good money management and that it isn’t difficult.
Aside from imparting valuable financial info to local youth, Travis Credit Union plans to sweeten the experience by offering attendees’ refreshments, prizes and a drawing for an Apple Watch.
