Nationally renowned Latina storyteller and performance artist, Olga Loya, is set to bring her own personal brand of vibrant storytelling to Richmond this week.
Described as a “family storytelling workshop” by Deborah Bonet, a library associate with the Richmond Public Library, the free event is scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015, at the aforementioned library’s M.F. Whittlesey Room, 325 Civic Center Plaza, Richmond.
According to Bonet, the storytelling workshop is geared for “whole families” to enjoy, particularly those with children age seven and over.
In sharing traditional tales originating from Latin America and from her own varied and colorful life growing up in the barrio of East Los Angeles, Loya expertly employs her voice, body—and sometimes music and dance—to invite her listeners into the imaginative and unexpected worlds of her stories.
Loya’s artful storytelling and image conjuring enable the fabric of her family, and that of the greater Latino culture, to endure by enrobing them in folktales, ancient myths, history, dreams and more.
During Loya’s bilingual English/Spanish storytelling workshop in Richmond, Bonet says that she will help “support families in creating their own storytelling” through the use of “games, exercises and other prompts.”
The event is sponsored by the Richmond Public Library and the Literacy for Every Adult program (LEAP) and has the overriding aim of “supporting family literacy through literacy events,” that are “bilingual and culturally diverse,” per Bonet.
“I envision a world of passionate kindness, supported by my mission of using stories to help people overcome emotional and cultural borders,” states Loya on her website re: her mission. “It is my fervent belief that stories reveal the commonality and individuality in our lives, that diversity offers opportunities to embrace the richness of cultures, that there is wisdom to be found in stories shared with fierce honesty, and, most telling of all, that laughter softens hearts.”
