An upcoming For Richmond collaboration aims to do a beautiful thing in Richmond…By giving away free backpacks to school children.
The “Community Matters Backpack Give-Away Jamboree” is set for Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, from 12 to 3 p.m. outside at Triangle Court Apartments, 960 Triangle Court, Richmond.
Elementary, middle school and high school students from Richmond are invited to attend the event with their families, during which they can receive a free backpack. Priority will be given to residents of Triangle Court Apartments. Adding to the festivities will be a free BBQ lunch.
For Richmond is collaborating on hosting the backpack giveaway with Tracy Youngston, CEO and founder of Beauti For Ashes, a nonprofit that aims to empower at-risk women and youth toward a life of greatness and healing via one-on-one workshops, mentoring and positive ways of self-expression.
Youngston, who recently relocated from Florida to Richmond, established her organization after facing numerous hardships as a teen mother and triumphing over them thanks to her faith.
“God took my mess and made it beautiful,” said Youngston, which prompted her to name Beauti For Ashes after the Bible verse Isaiah 61:3. “To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair…”
“My aim is to pay it forward because I remember as a teen mom there were many days that my paycheck ran under,” Youngston said about her motivation re: teaming up with For Richmond on the event. “If it wasn’t for organizations helping me with my children, there would have been no Christmas and no school supplies.”
Currently, 150 backpacks are ready to be given away at the upcoming event. However, those planning to attend are encouraged to register so that more supplies can be purchased if needed. Registering is easy; simply text @backpackg to 81010.
As part of the backpack giveaway, Youth Pastor Hosanna Motu of Hilltop Community Church will pray over the children for a good school year.
“The upcoming backpack giveaway at Triangle Court is truly a beautiful thing,” said For Richmond Executive Director Kyra Worthy. “We are thrilled to join together with Beauti For Ashes to help children start their school year off right.”
