The Richmond community has a new health resource to turn to for quality treatment and care, thanks to the recent launch of the LifeLong William Jenkins Health Center.
LifeLong Medical Care held a grand opening ceremony for the new health center Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016, to offer residents a sneak peek at the facility located at 150 Harbour Way (at Bissell Avenue) in Richmond.
According to a recent report in the Richmond Confidential, the newly opened center is named in honor of the late Dr. William Jenkins, a Richmond-based pediatrician who transcended racial barriers and helped generations of local families maintain good health.
“Before there were community health centers, there were individual private docs who worked in low-income communities making health care accessible,” the Richmond Confidential quoted LifeLong Executive Director Marty Lynch as saying.
“Bill Jenkins was one of the best examples of that.”
While the center currently is solely focused on serving pediatric care, it will eventually also offer dental and mental health services for adults, per the same report.
On its website, the center describes its core services as being: General pediatric care; treatment of illness; preventive care; well child exams; and immunizations.
The center’s hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (clinic hours) and Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (office hours).
LifeLong Medical Care is a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center serving Alameda, Contra Costa, and Marin counties with 14 health centers, two dental centers, an Adult Day Health Center, three school-based health centers, a Supportive Housing Program, and Urgent Care services.
Since the closure of Doctors Medical Center (DMC) in San Pablo in April 2015, access to quality, affordable health care has been challenging for West Contra Costa County’s 250,000 residents.
In Richmond in particular, the opening of this new health center is akin to a “fresh pond of water in a health care desert,” said For Richmond Executive Director Kyra Worthy. “We commend LifeLong Medical Care for prioritizing and responding to the pressing health care needs of our community.”
