An upcoming Richmond event aims to offer community members the perfect prescription for physical, mental and emotional health, courtesy of a local park.
The “2nd Annual National Park Rx Day” welcomes locals to the recently revitalized John F. Kennedy Park on Cutting and 41st Street in Richmond Sunday, April 23, 2017, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. as part of a national movement to demonstrate how parks can benefit a person’s all-around good health.
“We are working with several other agencies to develop a Park Prescription Program in West Contra Costa County,” said Johann Frazier, executive assistant to the director of community services for the City of Richmond. “We’re hoping to bring awareness to having ‘park prescriptions’…and to collaborate and work together to get people to use parks around physical, mental and emotional health.”
Sponsored by the City of Richmond, the National Park Service, Contra Costa Health and its program, ‘Walk and Roll 2 School,’ Richmond’s Park Rx Day will treat attendees to free box lunches and health screenings such as blood pressure and body mass index (BMI) checks.
Music from a local radio station (TBD) will get everyone pumped up to enjoy a host of activities including an obstacle course, bike demo on the park’s pump track, bike rodeo, fitness activities, tai chi and Zumba demos, seed planting, face painting, Frisbee, booths with giveaways, a raffle and a unique activity called “Walk with a doc,” where participants can walk around the park with a doctor and ask him/her questions.
According to organizers, the family friendly event will be held rain or shine and is free to attend.
According to the National Park Service, “Park Rx Day is a day for people everywhere to give themselves the gift of good health, with a walk in the park, and to celebrate the growing Park Rx movement that has doctors prescribing time in parks to their patients to improve their health.”
